One brush with rock and roll greatness
Well what happened was I brought my Stratocaster to Jeff Beck’s room as he asked me to that afternoon. He took it out and handed it to me and said “play something”. So I barely eeked out a very bad version of a riff I knew from “Cause We Ended As Lover’s” - and handed it back to a grinning Jeff Beck - very embarrassing. I don’t remember what happened next. So on the way down the elevator to my room I ran into John McLaughlin who Jeff was on tour with. He somehow knew I was in the house band and said “Wow, let’s jam when we get back from playing”. Stupefied I said sure! He was really up and excited. So that night our little band was playing in the hotel bar - we had a special set list ready for when and if they walked in. They did walk in just as we were taking a break. Our keyboard player was totally freaked out and said to me aside that he was going to his room and not coming back. John comes up to me and says something like “when you guys come back on, we’ll join you”. I said well, my keyboard player has gone to his room and does not want to jam. John says “oh well let’s go and get him, you lead the way.” Jeff was there also, being kind of shy. So there I am in the elevator with Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin. We get to his room, he opens the door to see me with John on one side and Jeff on the other - he’s standing there in his boxer shorts. John says “hey man let’s go, we’re gonna jam!”. Elliot (the keyboard player) is just flabbergasted - gives some excuse like he doesn’t feel good or something - John says, ok, feel better, and we walk back to the bar. Jeff says, John you go ahead and start, we’ll be back here and join in soon. John asks me if it’s ok if they use our equipment - of course! He proceeds to the little stage and is joined by all these amazing session players - I think it was Bernard Purdy on drums, Will Lee on bass, people like that. So Jeff and I sit in the back drinking beers listening to the most amazing jam session ever. It went on for hours and drew crowds lined up out the door. Later Jeff’s manager gives me my guitar back with $200 and says “we put all the rewiring back that Jeff wanted”. I’m thinking, damn, you should have left it alone!
